How does EVOO help you if you suffer from kidney failure?

How does EVOO help you if you suffer from kidney failure?

Deterioration of kidney function is a common problem among older people and can become a chronic disease.

In recent years, new discoveries have been made about the specific benefits of EVOO consumption in reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Its properties have been effective in patients suffering from diabetes or neurodegenerative diseases.

However, recent studies have found that it has a positive effect on lesser-known diseases, making EVOO the most powerful ally for our health.

Chronic renal failure is characterised by a progressive loss of kidney function. The disease slowly worsens without very noticeable symptoms until the kidneys cease to function almost completely.

This disease is one of the major chronic degenerative diseases affecting humans in old age.

We'll tell you how to combat it below!

To begin with, what is kidney failure and what are its symptoms?

Kidney failure is a disease that affects the kidneys and prevents them from carrying out their functions, thus generating other problems and insufficiencies in our body.

When the kidneys are healthy, they prevent the accumulation of toxins and excess fluids in the body. They also balance the salts and minerals in the blood, among many other things.

The main symptoms of kidney failure are:

  • Swelling, usually in the legs, feet or ankles
  • Dhead smells
  • Tiredness during the day and problems sleeping at night
  • Stomach ache, feeling poor appetite or weight loss
  • Produce little urine
  • Muscle cramps, weakness or numbness

The effect of the Mediterranean diet on renal impairment

Because this diet is based on the use of EVOO, this ingredient has been shown to be very useful in the treatment of chronic kidney disease.

A recent study by the University of Rome and the University of Florence has demonstrated the usefulness of phenolic compounds in Extra Virgin Olive Oil in treating this disease.

To carry out this test, they divided patients with CKD into two different groups. The first group was given EVOO with a high content of phenolic compounds for more than two months. The second group was given EVOO with a low polyphenol content for the same period of time.

In both cases we observed a clear improvement in renal function, although these effects were greater and longer lasting in the group that received EVOO with a high content of phenolic compounds.

Due to the high polyphenol content of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, it has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect on people suffering from chronic kidney disease, and these protective actions last over time.

Mediterranean Diet

What is the effect of EVOO on the kidney?

Extra Virgin Olive Oil is considered a vegetable fat that provides our organism with monounsaturated fats, such as oleic acid, and polyunsaturated fats, such as linoleic acid.

It also helps to reduce oxidative stress and lowers LDL cholesterol. It also increases levels of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol), thus helping to control hypertension.

EVOO is a great cardiovascular protector due to its essential fats. In those who have kidney problems, consumption of oil gives good results, as it protects the heart and arteries, helping to control blood pressure, a very important factor for those with renal insufficiency.

What foods should be included in the diet for kidney failure?

In the table of foods for kidney failure we find:
